Terror From Beyond
An in-class shoot about a radio broadcasting of aliens invading New Jersey.
It is unfortunate that I was actually sick on the day that my classmates shot this film. But, never mind that. Let's dive into the roles for this film to be shot. There was a director, a slate, an actor, a prop manager, lighting crew, camera operators, and a script supervisor. Of course, how could I forget a role? I was the editor. The type of shots filmed for this film were medium shots, a medium close-up, a side profile shot, and an over the shoulder shot. Watching the behind the scenes footage while choosing my footage for the film was one of the best parts of this project. It felt like I was a part of the filming process, even though I wasn't in attendance. All in all, I guess you can say I provided support in spirit.
Moving on to the editing process of this project. First, I placed purple tags on all the footage I wanted to edit with in order to separate them from all the downloaded footage. Then I carefully listened to the script for inspiration on finding stock footage for the film. The film starts off with a white and red breaking news intro followed by a static screen. Next, is a lightly blurred transition from the static to an over the shoulder shot of the acting news broadcaster. I listened to the strong emphases at the beginning of sentences to cut to a different scene. For example, he says in the video, "It's chaos out the folks". The scene cuts from a side profile shot of the broadcaster to a medium shot. The stock footage I used was a closeup of an alien, a pan of New Jersey, strange lights in the sky, chaotic spiky objects surrounding buildings, unidentified flying objects, and military men walking through smoke. I stylized the last scene before the outro by adding a zoom out effect on the medium shot of the news broadcaster. Lastly, I used the same light blurred transition into a static screen. The static screen was followed by a "Thanks for watching sign" and two video clips to fake watch that are typically used as links to other videos.
The planning took more time than the editing for this project. I've also become more accustomed to using Adobe Premiere Pro, which could be the reason why it took less time to edit this project. I had filter out which footage I wanted to use for the project and separate it into a folder. Then I had to plan brainstorm which opening shot to use and what shots followed after the other. I had to decide how I wanted to stylize my video. I also learned how to overlay short video clips into my sequence. Well that's all it took to edit this project. I hope you enjoy the video!
