Music Video
An in-class video shoot for a music video.
This project was an in-class group video shoot. Every student had a role to play. My role changed a couple of times throughout this video shoot. I was in charge of the audio. Then my role changed to writing the scenes down. Then I participated in the music video. Everyone collectively chose the song We Will Rock You by Queen. For the production crew we had a director, assistant director, camera crew, lighting crew, actors, audio person, and slate.
The scenes shot for this music video were very interesting and fun to watch. Michelle was the director for this video. The idea for scene 1 was the professor calling out a student in class. The student being called out was the main character. The main character gets angry with the professor and gets up when the song says, "We will, we will rock you!". He throws papers up and storms out of the classroom before the second verse of the song. The next scene that follows is of the main character marching out of the class and calling his classmates over to march out with him. His classmates then follow him while marching and raising their fists singing, "We will, we will rock you". The camera crew also recorded a side scene with Sarah rocking her hair to the "We will rock you" part of the song as well. The final scene recorded for this video was of the main character doing his guitar solo from the top of a staircase and gradually moving down while rocking out on his guitar.
The editing process for this project was very challenging. There were all kinds of different lighting depending on the camera angle. So color matching the lighting in each video took a while. I tried to use the multi-cam editing style, but not all of the footage synced with the audio properly. So, I had to manually insert most of the footage from the source panel into my sequence. The director never recorded a scene for the second verse of the song. So what I chose to do creatively was use the classroom scene for both verses. Only on the second verse do you see the main character throw the papers up in frustration and march out the room. The same footage is used for the first verse, but it cuts to Sarah's scene where she rocks her hair from side to side before the song transitions into the second verse. I stylized this video by my scene cut choices and by adding gifs of flashes of lights. For example, I added the flashing lightning gifs on Sarah's hair for a more rock n roll type of feel. I also added a gif of a zap coming from the main character's finger whenever he pointed at the professor and to the camera. The last gif I added was glowing fire to seem as if it were coming off of the main character's guitar during his solo for emphasis on how hard he was rocking out.
Overall, I do still have much to learn about editing, but my skills have improved throughout the semester. I will continue to use the skills I have already gained in this class to become more experienced with video editing. I will also continue to try to learn new skills in my free time. I had lots of fun creating mood boards, filming, and editing in my intro to video class. Who knows. This just might become my new hobby.
